When children face a serious illness, the hospital environment often becomes not just a medical space but their temporary world as they undergo what for many are extremely harsh treatments. Long stays, hallway lights, quiet wards. These are not conducive to childhood, creativity, or connection. The Bardo Foundation set out to change that at Radiumhospitalet.
Thanks to the Bardo Running Club in their fundraising efforts and generous sponsorship from Bohus, we renovated and furnished a dedicated youth room. What was once a sterile corner is now a place to play, rest, talk, make healthy meals, and simply “be a kid”. A small refuge of normalcy in the storm of treatment.
This isn’t just about decoration though. It’s psychology in action. Studies show that when children have safe spaces, and elements of choice (color, lighting, comfort), stress levels fall, cooperation with treatment improves, and resilience strengthens. In our view, medical care must meet the emotional and social needs of patients, not just their clinical ones.
We are proud that this youth room will host patients and families alike, offering moments of respite, quiet, or camaraderie. It’s a small foundation stone in building the support structures patients and their families need throughout treatment.
Thank you to Bohus for their generous contributions, which helped furnish the space. And to the awesome Bardo Running Club. Not only did they raise funds, but they also gave their own time to put together furniture and create the space. Amazing teamwork from all to help others!
