For children and young people diagnosed with osteosarcoma, surviving cancer is only part of the journey. Many face life changing surgery that includes the loss of a limb, followed by the challenge of rebuilding their lives.
For Elieyner, a brave teenager from Venezuela, that journey became even more difficult. After losing his leg to osteosarcoma, he was left without a prosthetic limb. In a country where access to healthcare is limited and specialist rehabilitation is often unavailable or unaffordable, the opportunity to walk independently again felt out of reach.
Thanks to the generosity of Bardo Foundation supporters, we were able to change that.
By funding Elieyner's first prosthetic limb, we have given him the opportunity to regain his independence, improve his mobility and look towards the future with renewed confidence.
The reality of living with osteosarcoma in Venezuela
Osteosarcoma is the most common primary bone cancer affecting children, teenagers and young adults. While advances in treatment have improved survival in many countries, the challenges faced after treatment are very different depending on where a person lives.
In Venezuela, years of economic hardship have placed enormous pressure on the healthcare system. Families often struggle to access specialist cancer care, rehabilitation services and medical equipment. For many, prosthetic limbs are simply unaffordable.
After an amputation, a prosthetic limb is essential for restoring mobility and independence. Without one, everyday activities such as attending school, finding work or simply moving around safely become incredibly difficult.
Giving hope through a prosthetic limb
When Elieyner lost his leg, he also lost many of the opportunities most young people take for granted.
Through our mission to support one child or young adult a year, we funded his first prosthetic limb, giving him the chance to stand, walk and begin adapting to life after osteosarcoma.
A prosthetic is much more than a piece of medical equipment. It represents freedom, confidence and the opportunity to participate fully in everyday life. It enables young people to continue their education, pursue employment and reconnect with their communities.
For Elieyner, receiving his prosthetic is the beginning of a new chapter.
The difference your support makes
Every donation to Bardo Foundation helps us reach young people facing extraordinary challenges after an osteosarcoma diagnosis.
Your support allows us to provide practical assistance where healthcare systems cannot, ensuring that children and young adults have access to life changing equipment that would otherwise remain beyond their reach.
Because of your generosity, Elieyner can now take steps towards a more independent future.
Together we can help more young people
Sadly, Elieyner's story is not unique. Around the world, many young people who survive osteosarcoma continue to face significant barriers to rehabilitation because they cannot access the prosthetic limbs they need.
Bardo Foundation is committed to changing that.
With your continued support, we can provide more prosthetic limbs, restore independence and give hope to young people living with the lasting effects of bone cancer, regardless of where they live.
Together, we are helping young people take their first steps towards a brighter future.
Help us change another life.
Your donation could provide a life changing prosthetic limb to a young osteosarcoma patient who would otherwise go without. Together, we can restore mobility, independence and hope, one step at a time.
